Residential Care Model

Residential Care Model

Our homes operate under the Residential Care Model, which blends together relational and therapeutic models informed by the best evidence-led approaches alongside knowledge and best practice from across Barnardo’s.

Our homes build on young people’s strengths and help them to create meaningful memories. Children who have resided in our care often remain in touch with us as adults because they remember being treated with kindness and respect.

VISION

We strive to provide homes where children with a range of needs can have a loving and safe place to live, a home where they can have a short break, or time to recover from challenges in their lives before they’re ready to live with a family again or move forward towards independence.

PURPOSE

Our homes exist to meet the needs of children and young people who are: returning to their family (maybe short-term emergency provision); moving to or back into fostering placement; in need of a longer-term, stable home; or transitioning to independent or supported accommodation.

VALUES

Our homes are built on love and hope. We recognise children as unique individuals and support them to fulfil their potential. We’re committed to providing excellent and inclusive homes at a fair cost.

Working with the Barnardo’s Strategy

In everything we do, we work with children and young people to be safer, happier, healthier, and more hopeful.

We achieve change for children and young people by:

The Nine Residential Care Principles

1. Best choice, not last resort

Our children’s home will provide the very best of care for children and young people who for any reason need to live in them. Children and young people will be cared for in a safe space that helps them feel valued and supports them to build trusting relationships with others. This will provide children and young people with a strong foundation from which to grow.

2. Nothing about us with us

We will always work with children, young people, and their families to make sure that they’re able to make safe and well-informed decisions about their lives.

We recognise that there are many ways for a child or young person to express their wishes and feelings, and we will make sure that the people who are caring for them understand what they’re trying to express - whether verbal or non-verbal.

3. Opportunities to learn

Not all learning takes place in school. We believe that the children and young people who we care for also have the potential to be successful if they’re able to get involved in activities that support their learning and development and focus on their strengths. We speak with children and young people to make sure they can say what they need and we offer equipment, activities, and support that works for them.

4. Inspiring spaces to grow up in

Our homes are warm and welcoming places for children and young people to stay, whether for a short break or until they’re ready to live elsewhere. Our staff understand that all children and young people are different and how important it is to enjoy successes with them

5. Individual and holistic journeys

Our homes provide safe and stable places for children and young people to stay. The people working there know about the difficulties the young people have experienced and will seek to understand how we can help them look toward and achieve a happier future.

6. Relational not behavioural

Central to all our homes are strong, trusting, and lasting relationships between adults and the children living there. We accept children and young people for who they are and are ambitious for their future. Together, we celebrate successes and adapt to challenges.

7. Safety outside and in

Keeping children and young people safe is at the heart of all the work we do. We make sure that our team understand what they need to do to keep children and young people safe and the importance of creating an environment where they can be themselves. We invest our time to help children and young people develop the knowledge and skills they need to keep themselves safe.

8. Empowering Leaders & Teams

Our homes have leaders who [YP1] inspire those around them to be the very best they can be. The people in our teams strive to be positive role models and understand that all children and young people have strengths that should be nurtured. Our teams offer opportunities for children and young people to build upon the things they do well rather than focus on what they don’t do well.

This should be implied, don't think it warrants saying explicitly.

9. Thoughtful and caring moves

We understand that change can sometimes be a very frightening experience, which is why we take great care when planning for a child or young person to join or leave one of our homes.
